For quite some time now I have been doing Gum Bichromate photographic prints. These are prints made by contact printing either B/W or RGB/CMYK digital negatives onto Watercolor paper using process specific chemicals mixed with watercolor pigment. The image shown here was made using a B/W negative that was first printed using the Cyanotype process ( historically, the process that became "Blueprinting") after this layer was processed using the sun for exposure and water for development, another layer was printed, using the same negative. This new layer was printed using Windsor Newton Lamp Black mixed with Ammonium Dichromate and Gum Arabic and the sun for exposure and water for development. After drying the whole process was repeated using the same negative but this time I mixed B Sienna W/C with the Gum Bichromate chemicals. The borders of this print show the different layers that produced this final print. You can see more of these alternative process prints at:<br />http://larimerphoto.blogspot.com</p><div class="blogger-post-footer"><img width='1' height='1' src='https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/tracker/10649590-8965197956715661728?l=larimerart.blogspot.com' alt='' /></div>

New Prints....Photograpic prints

<a href="http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y65/jrlarimer/P1010019copy.jpg"><img style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 320px; CURSOR: hand; TEXT-ALIGN: center" alt="" src="http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y65/jrlarimer/P1010019copy.jpg" border="0" /></a><br />My relief printmaking energies have been redirected to photograpic printmaking! This takes me back to where I started many, many years ago. I started my creative pursuits as a photographer but gravitated to painting and relief printmaking later. But photography always played a part in each of the different processes that I undertook. Well, now I am back to exploring photography as my sole means of expression. No longer are my photos for reference, but they are now seen as the art itself. The photo shown here is one of my recent shots that was taken with the intent to be shown as a photograph...not as a reference for work in another medium. More of my work can be seen at this site: <a href="http://larimerphoto.blogspot.com/">PHOTOBLOG by Jim Larimer</a> At this site you will see new work and old work (pics taken as ref pictures) that I have converted into "Fine Art Expressions". Take a look and let me know what you think. Limited edition prints are available of all the images that you see. Mosy of my woodcuts have been printed in blacks and greys, but now I am going to venture into using more color. This is my first major attempt at incorporating color into my printing. This 7" x 7" print was made from 5 seperate carved blocks of 3/4 MDF and printed using Speedball Oil ink and Windsor Newton Oil paint mixed with Graphic Chemical "Tint Extender." I am looking forward to more exerimenting! As the introduction to this "blog" suggests I recently (along with my wife, Deanna) made a road trip to Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island. We left from Denver, CO and spent 4 days and drove 3000 miles making this journey to deliver 20 paintings to the Pilar Shephard Art Gallery for a "one man show" that opened on Aug 3rd. We traveled through 12 states and 4 Canadian Privinces during the trip and marvelled all the way at the scenery and the fact that things are pretty much the same across this country and Canada. The cars, restaurants (especially McDonalds, et al) people, habits, architecture, produce and pace of life are all the same. Well, on the East coast, McDonalds offers "McLobster" sandwiches! For a landlocked Rocky Mountain resident this was very interesting indeed. The trip was pleasantly uneventful in terms of difficulties encountered with transportation...the new Saturn ION got about 34 miles per gallon! We stayed with my family in Illinois the first night, Deanna's aunt in PA the next and at Daniels' (an artist friend)in Montreal the next night before arriving in PEI on the 4th day. The Gallery owners, Bob and Pilar, housed and fed us in royal splender for 5 days! What a treat. In Charlottetown we were met by some friends from Toronto who endured "exploding luggage" during their air flight to be present for the show and dinner at Bob and Pilar's home.<br /><br />Suprises and interesting tidbits along the way: Niagra Falls is a circus (almost obscene), road consruction is a real drag, Karla(Sister) and Dad were generous with accomadations, pet sitting, home grown tomatoes, libations, food and Love; Aunt Jean, Dar and Mary welcomed us with open arms and hearts and lots of Love too; Did not know about all the vineyards in New York along rt. 5; Canada is EXPENSIVE, Toronto archiecture is grand; Quebec makes it diificult for English only and the roads were bad; New Brunswick is peacefull, neat and clean; PEI very pastoral, our hosts, Bob and Pilar, made our stay absolutely memorable and comfortable, crows were irratating, water was amazing, lobster delicious, dirt/sand/rocks/everything was red, new potatoes of every variety grown across the island...major crop; Celtic influence on PEI; Razor Clams; Daniel; Jerry and Kia; White Castle Hamburgers and Taco Johns! So much more, but I best stop now. Jim<div class="blogger-post-footer"><img width='1' height='1' src='https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/tracker/10649590-112425843050049517?l=larimerart.blogspot.com' alt='' /></div>

"Mountain Wildflowers"

This one is basically an accident. I have been trying to work on my "Hanga" technique, especially the "inking." So I just carved a simple design into a piece of MDF and started to play with color, paste and brushes. I was really disappointed with the results and after thinking about the amount of time I had spent on this experiment I decided to try and make something out of it. I switched gears, did some more carving, proofed and more carving and so on, until I reached this point. I inked my block with oil based ink and this is what happened. I had originally anticipated this being something completely different, but fate takes one to surprising places. In this one I was experimenting. For my water soluable pigments I used "Sepia" water based ink, mixed with wall paper paste. Eggshell latex paint (green) mixed with the same paste, and water soluable "Ivory Black" oil paint mixed with the same. All was proofed on a very inexpensive piece of "printer paper" to see what would happen. My brush for applying the Ink was an old shaving cream brush trimmed flat. The result is crude, but I see a lot of possibilities for future prints. All are for sale, but would also enjoy any comments or critiques that you may have about them. The image size for each is the same, they have all been cut on Alder ply and they have all been printed in an original edition of 25. Each print is signed and numbered and double matted at 11" x 14". Only 25 matted prints are available, then the carved woodblock will be defaced, so no other prints can be made, and mounted in a special frame with a special "Artist's Proof" print. This is a 3 block cutting so it displays 4 tones. This time I mixed some Raw Umber into my greys and some Burnt Umber into the final black print. Since this is just a proof, I printed it on regular white bond paper. The image size is 5" x 7." I Used oil based black printing ink, but added Titanium White, Raw Umber and Burnt Umber oil paints for the different values in this. The three blocks that were carved for this print were 3/4 inch MDF. Today is their 1st wedding anniversay so I wanted to give them something special. I selected a photograph from their rehearsal dinner and used it to create this woodcut. The image size is 7" x 5" and was printed from two carved blocks of Cherry. I finally have a brayer, some real printing ink and decent paper, so this is my first "real" print. I am trying to understand the allure of doing these woodcuts and prints. I think that it is a combination of things. First, it is alot of physical work and alot of thinking which I find that can be very satisfying. It is also allowing me to venture more into the abstact and to not be so focused on detail and all of the minutae that I get drawn into when I am painting. Plus there is the thrill of pulling the first proof/print. Paintings develop slowly, but the results are always right there in front of you. With prints, you do all the work and then "get a copy" to see how successful you have been in your expression. All in all, it is proving to be an enjoyable journey into discovering new and different modes of expression. With my painting I was feeling stagnated and locked into something that, although was working, was feeling contrived and flat. So, yesterday Painting, today printmaking and tomorrow.....? What a wonderful journey to be embarked upon! I have a few more that I am waiting for proper ink and other supplies to print, so I will post them later. This latest one, "The Dancer's" I have dedicated to my wife, Deanna. This is my favorite so far and I think is indicative of the direction that I am going to go with my "woodcuts." I have dedicated this to Deanna because of her love of dancing (in spite of my two left feet!), so this first "Artist's Proof" is my gift to her. I am still using rudimentary materials...oil paint, instead of ink; my hands, instead of a baren; a brush instead of a brayer and printer paper, instead of a quality paper. Hopefully I will soon graduate to using proper tools and materials and will have gained a bit more insight into the technique to produce more sophisticated images. These images are all small, about 5" x 6"and continue to be carved not in wood, but MDF. This is still very crude and rudimentary, but I am learning a bit more with each attempt. I am experimenting with monochrome woodcuts to hone my carving skills to be able to progress to multiple blocks for creating color prints. Thanks for looking. This was done "off the cuff" and with "stuff" that I had available. The wood block is acually 1/4 " MDF, the ink is Ivory Black oil paint, no brayer for ink (paint) application, just a bristle brush. The buren I used was my hand and the paper was Archival? printer paper. This image is just a proof, and will not result in an extended edition of prints. But it is getting me excited about further exploration into the possibilities of this medium/process. Do a Google search on "Woodcuts" and see what amazing work has been done. For me it is the process that is exciting...and the tools, the tools, the tools! And the wood...traditionalists use Cherry, Birch , Pear and others. But to me all wood is good, maleable, natural and a joy to work with. so, stay "tuned" to see what happens! This is still in a very early stage, but I am somewhat troubled by all of the cool blue. My palette is normally very warm so this this one really feels odd. I already know that when I proceed with this I am going to warm up the blue quite a bit and try to introduce somemore browns and reds. I am working from my imagination on this so I am not sure in what direction this might veer off to. 20 x 16, oil on MDF. Still no figurative element, and I am seriously reconsidering my intent to add that dimension..at least to this painting. As I look at the compostion it seems to me that another vertical element, roughly the size of a door or window, would make this incredibly busy and confusing. One option would be to add that figure/figures in the foreground street. In looking at the paintings of the "masters" people in the streets made sense, but in this day and age people in the streets are uncommon unless they are at a cross-walk or perhaps at a street fair. In this case the cross walk would be too far to the left, and thus the comp thrown off; and there is nothing to suggest that there is a street fair is happening. So, I am thinking that I will do a bit of final touch up and let this one be as is. And in the future my ref pictures will be taken so as to include a figurative component. Does that make any sense, or am I missing an opprotunity? Mark, I really liked the idea of the "bubushkas" and if this scene was in a different place and time, they would look great in the foreground street. That gives me some ideas for future paintings. As an aside, your comments and even this painting still does not show up on my AOL IE browser; I am looking and commenting on Netscape. I am not savy enough to understand why this happens. It is another view of the buildings that were in "The Highlands in March". I haven't got to the point where the figure/figures have been introduced as I am still working on how that element can be included without taking away from the composition. I also need to tone down the "light" on the left...it is a bit harsh and difficult to photofraph! Will post the finish later tonight or tomorrow morn. Oil on MDF. I am not finished with the series of paintings of the Highlands neighborhood in Denver. What I want to do different is to start adding a figurative element to these "Urban Landscapes." I have been looking at the work of Utrillo...his work seems to have a different dimension when the figure, obscure mostly, is incorporated. Another painter that I admire, Hopper, also incorporates the figure into his later "Urban Landscapes," and I like the narrative that it suggests. By adding a figure there is the suggestion of humanity that contrasts to the geometry of the composition. So we will see what happens next! No, there isn't going to be any snow! I started with an old discarded painting that even after I sanded long and hard on it, it remained a dark thalo blue. The rut does not seem so deep when you look up to the sky rather than fixing your gaze on your feet. Plus my wife explained that even a seed planted in a rut can still flower. So here goes a new one...this is in its very, very early stages. Except for the blue everything else is just pencil lead from the drawing moved around with a bit of turpentine. I took the picture of this scene today and it was pretty overcast, so the light and contrast are pretty flat in the ref pic. I don't know yet if I will stay with that or if I will invent some dramatic light. If I am truly back in the flow the painting will let me know what to do! 24 x 18, oil on MDF. It is in its early stages and has quite a bit of work left to go. I have really been having problems with "flow" lately, not sure what the problem is but it is really discouraging. It seems to take a whole lot of effort to even go into the studio, and then when in front of the easel, composition and palette decisions are excruciating. So the finish of this one may be slow to happen! 18 x 24, oil on MDF. The start of this is very similar to that of "Hoboken Snow," in that I am painting over an old image, and have a lot of color to cover up before I can start developing the painting. Still am trying to decide what my light is going to be in this. One thing I was thinking when I first started was doing a moonlit nocturne, or a street light lighted painting. I am still thinking...and waiting for the painting to say something! That is very contrary to the way that I normally paint, so I think that led to alot of problems in balancing this out from a tonal and temperature point of view. There was some other problems as well, and there probably still are, but I am going to call this one done. I went back into this and changed to a warm light, and cool shadows. I am thinking that it works much better now. I really like the composition, it is just a question of the right palette. I am interested to hear what you think. Also, on the previous WIP'S I was trying to capitalize on the inherent coolness of white to provide my brightest lights. As a result, I think that the "whites" really became too dominate and washed out what I was trying to paint. In re-doing this I thought about adding some distant trees behind the buildings, but ultimately decided that I wanted to keep the strong and harsh contrast of the roof line for "ooomph!" Backround trees would have softened this up too much. It is late, so I apologize for a pic taken in less than ideal light.
